Professional qualifications after brexit

The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020, it entered the transition period, which will last until 31 December 2020.

Professional qualifications of the British and EU citizens that have been acquired in the UK will be recognised according to the Professional Qualifications Recognition Act No. 18/2004 Coll. during the transition period, i. e. till December 31 2020. http://www.msmt.cz/eu-and-international-affairs/postup-pri-zadani-o-uznani-odborne-kvalifikace

This Act will no longer apply to the British citizens after the transition period (unless different agreement is concluded between the UK and the EU) and the recognition of professional qualifications will be executed through the academic recognition or so called nostrification. http://www.msmt.cz/areas-of-work/tertiary-education/recognition-of-foreign-higher-education-in-the-czech

The Professional Qualifications Recognition Act No. 18/2004 Coll. will furher apply to the EU citizens who have acquired professional qualifications before the withdrawal of the UK from the EU because in this case the professional qualifications were acquired when the UK was still an EU member. http://www.msmt.cz/eu-and-international-affairs/postup-pri-zadani-o-uznani-odborne-kvalifikace

In cases when the EU citizens will acquire their professional qualifications in the UK after the withdrawal of the UK from the EU, the Professional qualifications Recognition Act no. 18/2004 Coll. will no longer apply to them because their qualifications were not acquired in an EU country. Therefore, the recognition of professional qualifications will follow the procedure of academic recognition. http://www.msmt.cz/areas-of-work/tertiary-education/recognition-of-foreign-higher-education-in-the-czech

The agreement regarding future relations between the UK and the EU is beeing negotiated during the transition period. The procedure that will regulate mutual recognition of professional qualifications will be dependent on the existence and content of such agreement. Regarding this, the Czech Republic would prefer if the currrent state was preserved in the broadest possible scope. This could be achieved eg. through the Agreement about the accesion of the UK to the Directive 2005/36/EC on the recognition of professional qualifications.
