Bologna Process Ministerial Conference

April 28-29, 2009, Louvain

Follow the conference live via internet streaming here.

Ten years after the historical Bologna Declaration that structurally reshaped European higher education, another Ministerial Conference is planned in Leuven/Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium).

The Benelux Ministers Frank Vandenbroucke and Marie-Dominique Simonet (Flemish and French Community of Belgium), Ronald Plasterk (Netherlands) and François Biltgen (Luxembourg) have invited their European Colleagues in charge of higher education in the 46 countries participating in the Bologna Process, to jointly define political orientations for the coming 10 years.

The conference will take place at the historical location of the ancient University of Louvain - the oldest higher education institution in the Benelux founded in 1425 - of which the modern universities Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KUL) and Université catholique de Louvain (UCL) share the legacy. The choice for universities as conference venue has also symbolic value. The Benelux countries would like to give clear visibility to the substantial role the academic community plays in the achievement of the Bologna goals.

Bologna is more than mere convergence of policies set by public authorities. Higher education institutions, staff and students all together have made an impressive contribution to the implementation and will continue to define the shape of the European Higher Education Area.

First Bologna Policy Forum

An increasing number of countries around the world have shown their interest to be involved in a dialogue with the countries participating in the Bologna Process on how worldwide cooperation in higher education can be enhanced. At the same time there is growing interest among European countries to develop closer links with higher education systems around the world. Therefore, for the first time, a Bologna Policy Forum will be organised between Ministers of the 46 Bologna countries and colleagues from different parts of the world to facilitate global dialogue. This Bologna Policy Forum will take place in the morning of 29 April 2009 at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) in the framework of the Bologna Ministerial Conference.
