Statement by ministers taking part in the conference on the Bologna Process

The Benelux Ministers together with the Czech Presidency and the European Commission are fully aware of the student demonstrations currently taking place on the margins of the Bologna Ministerial Conference on higher education reform.

The Bologna Process has produced and will continue to produce greater transparency, better cooperation between institutions, and increased opportunities for mobility as well as more quality in higher education.

Regarding the concerns expressed by the students, we wish to affirm that the current Ministerial Meeting puts the social dimension of higher education very high on the political agenda and emphasises that there is more need for equitable access to and equal opportunities in higher education. Moreover, in view of widening access and participation in higher education, public funding remains of the utmost priority.

We would like to highlight that the Bologna Process is a stakeholder driven process with full student participation and involvement at all levels. As an associate member of the process, the European Students' Union has been a consistent advocate of the social dimension of higher education and the need for more public funding.

Watch the broadcast of the ministerial meeting of the 46 members of the European Cultural Convention, representatives of intergovernmental organisations (the European Commission, the Council of Europe, UNESCO), higher education institutions, students, employers, social partners and other experts who gather in Leuven, Belgium, to discuss the future of the Bologna Process -
