What is a regulated profession?

A profession, professional activity or trade is regulated when there is a legislative regulation giving a condition under which the profession can be pursued. Without meeting these conditions (qualification, education, good repute etc..), the professional is not entitled to pursue the profession.

If the profession is NOT regulated in the Czech Republic, the professional may pursue the profession without recognition of qualification. Then it depends on the employer if they find the qualification of the applicant sufficient.

If the profession IS regulated, then the professional has to apply for recognition of his/her qualification by the competent recognition authority in the Czech Republic.

The competent recognition authority entitled to decide on the application for recognition of professional qualification is the central administrative authority (ministries, chambers etc.) whose competence includes the regulated profession. In case the applicant wishes to pursue the regulated profession as an entrepreneur, the competent authority is the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The list of all regulated profession can be found in the Database of regulated professions incl. the competent authority, requiered education, experience and/or other competence. To find our more about all regulated professions in the EU, EEA and Switzerland, please go to European database of regulated professions.
